Review: Nanoleaf blocks - a much better square smart light

Ever since the introduction of Nanoleaf Canvas, I've been a fan of the square form factor for my smart lights. Back in 2018, Canvas was the company's second major product following the original Nanoleaf Light Panels, offering a more interactive and touch-sensitive smart lighting experience with modular square panels. Next came Skylight, and now we have Nanoleaf Blocks smart lights.

Like other Nanoleaf Light Panels ( Triangles, Mini Triangles, Hexagons, Canvas) Nanoleaf Blocks is fully modular. Nanoleaf Blocks share the same connector as the Nanoleaf Shapes line. I tried out connecting the two systems with mixed results (I'm not sure that you are supposed to do this) and even less sure that they look good connected together. I think it's best to let these different systems exist on their own. It could be my imagination, but the connectors feel snappier and more secure than previous shapes connectors which helps a lot in the mounting process.

Shapes have a standard depth of 0.24 inches while the Blocks are 1.1" deep. The depth is a nice change, and gives a whole new dimension to the ambient glow.

Similar to Nanoleaf Skylight, Blocks have a diffused cover made of translucent white plastic. The cover on Skylight is glossy, while the cover on Blocks is matte.

Nanoleaf Blocks Smarter kits come with either 6 panels ($199.99) or 9 panels ($249.99). The standard size is 9.1" x 9.1" x 1.1" which is slightly smaller than Skylight at 12 inches per side. What truly sets Nanoleaf Blocks apart is the mix-and-match add-ons, which include swappable diffusers—such as textured surfaces, light pegboards, or even shelves. These allow you to create depth, texture, and a fully personalized design that adapts to your room.

There is also a smaller version of Blocks which is 4.5" x 4.5" x 1.1"

The add-on kits are available in a few different options.

Music Visualization

One area where Nanoleaf Blocks stands out is when using LIGHTLINK for your intelligent music visualization. Their fast response rate is perfect for creating a stunning visual experience that moves with every beat. I’ve been impressed with my experience so far. Check out this video for a great example of Blocks in action with LIGHTLINK

In addition, standard music synchronization is built in and the upcoming launch of “Orchestrator” gives you endless options to create the ultimate party mode.

Installation & Setup: Flexibility and Performance

Nanoleaf Blocks are designed for easy installation —no need for electrical work or complicated setups. They use the standard peel-and-stick method for mounting to your wall with “command strips”. You can create your own layout, mount the squares on your walls, and easily move or rearrange them as needed. Blocks offer flexibility and are perfect for renters or anyone who prefers a non-permanent solution. However, to protect your wall and paint I recommend using 3M command strips instead of the included permanent mounting stickers. These have always created wall damage for me when removing (becuase they stick so well). The 3M strips are worth the extra investment to save you the headache of wall repair when removing them, especially for renters.

smart home control

Like all Nanoleaf products, Nanoleaf Blocks can be controlled through the Nanoleaf Mobile & Desktop App, and they’re compatible with popular smart home ecosystems, including Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Samsung SmartThings. Voice control, app-based automation, and customization are equally easy with both products. I didn’t encounter any problems when pairing my Blocks in the Nanoleaf app for the first time. They use the standard QR code pairing method that all Nanoleaf products use. If anything, the process may have been slightly quicker.

Controller Upgrade

What you will find different is the shape of the controller. Due to their larger depth, Nanoleaf created a controller to fit with the look of Blocks. It offers all of the same functionality of the Shapes controllers (Power, Brightness, Scene Control, Music mode).

The controller has a permanently mounted connector which makes it more difficult to remove but also more secure. Make sure you save the QR pairing on your instruction booklet or take a picture of the back of the controller before mounting it in case you need to do a reset / re-pair in the future.

So far, I’ve been impressed with this new Nanoleaf product. The extra depth creates some nice dimensionality to a wall-mounted light and the accessories give you a great chance to customize. For those new to the Nanoleaf ecosystem, Blocks is a great first product or a worthwhile addition to your current lighting setup.
